Headlight Testing. Headlight testing was carried out by the Automobile Association (Wanganui) in Feilding, Taihape and Wanganui recently. Seventy-nine cars were tested in Wanganui and 62 in Feilding. “Although not many motorists availed themselves of our offer we have the satisfaction of knowing that we are giving a service,” said the president of the association, Mr. G. W. Sampson. Rotary Speaker.
Guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Wanganui Rotary Club, to be held next Tuesday, will be Captain Mortimer, who is the newly appointed Salvation Army Officer at Wanganui Captain Mortimer recently arrived from Africa and his subject will be from Africa and his subject will be “Colonial Development in Central Africa.” The attendance at last Tuesday’s meeting was 81.58 per cent.
Rear Lights For Cycles? Bicycles should be fitted with tail lights in place of rear reflectors in the opinion of the Automobile Association (Wanganui), which decided at its July executive meeting that it would support any move to make this compulsory. Such a move was favoured by the New Zealand Road Safety Council, it was stated. Members said that reflectors could not always be picked up by a car’s headlights and the white patches on rear mudguards were often tar from satisfactory.
Signpost for Church. “We should do all we can to help the churches,” said Dr. E. E. Porritt, at a meting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wanganui), when the St. Laurence’s Church authorities, Aramoho, asked the A.A. to signpost the church for the benefit of motorists camping at Aramoho Park. The church officers said they would bear the cost of the sign if the AA. would provide and erect it. “If other churches ask for signs on the same terms we will provide them," said the president, Mr. G. W- Sampson.
Elderly Motorist’s Protest. A Wanganui motorist in the over 70 age group wrote to the Automobile Association protesting that it had cost him 10s 6d for a medical examination so that he could renew his driving licence, and expressing the view that the sum should be recoverable under Social Security. “Why can’t he get it refunded?” asked a member. “I don’t know,” replied the secretary, Mr F. J. Hill. The association decided that it could , take no action in the matter. Farewell To Rhodes Scholar. An official farewell will be given at the Wanganui Technical College on Monday morning, to an old pupil of the school, Mr. R. W. Burchfield, who will shortly be leaving for the United Kingdom to take up his Rhodes Scholarship studies. The Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., will attend the farewell and an invitation has been extended to Mr. J. B. F. Cotterill, M.P., Members of the Board of Managers of the college, representatives of old pupils’ associations and the parents of Mr. Burchfield will also be present.
Companies Registered. Registration of Kakatahi Stores Limited, Parapara Road, as a private company is contained in the latest issue of the Mercantile Gazette The capital of the company is £3OOO in £1 shares and the subscribers are V. C. Dillon. 1501, and M. E. Dillon 1499 shares. The objects of the company are described as grocery and incidental. Notice is also given of the registration of the Chindie Land Co., Ltd., Bruce Street, Hunterville, as a private company ,with a capital of £lO,OOO in £1 shares. The subscribers are J. W. Mcßae and I. J. Mcßae, of Taihape, with 7500 and 2500 shares respectively. The objects of the company are farmers and incidental.
