COAL MINES TOLL IN UNITED STATES

WASHINGTON, May 31 (Recd 7.5 pm).—A total of 1,259,081 miners had been maimed, mangled or killed in American coalpits during the last 19 years, John L. Lewis, United Mineworkers’ Union president, told the Senate Labour sub-committee. Urging that Congress pass immediately a Bill to give Federal inspectors the right to close mines whore they believed imminent danger existed, Lewis denounced State officials and coal mine operators for alleged failure to assure mine safety. He added that during the first two years of the Second World War coalmine casualties exceeded those in the armed services.
