HADLEE LOSES TOSS AGAINST SOMERSET
LONDON, June 1 (Rec. 1.10 am). —Hadlee was not sorry to lose the toss against Somerset at Taunton, for if he had won he would have had the difficult decision of batting on the wet wicket or putting in the county side. Rain delayed play by half an hour and although the wicket was covered.it is very damp. It is likely that it may assist the New Zealand bowlers Cowie, Cave, Cresswell and Burtt, but at the moment there is no certainty of this. Further showers are expected. Wallace is taking a well-earned rest. Somerset are fifth in the championship table this season, but have played more matches than most counties The New Zealanders had a long, tiring bus journey from Brighton to Taunton after beating Sussex. They travelled 155 miles and reached the hotel u ell after midnight. Rain again stopped play and at the luncheon adjournment the score was: SOMERSET First Innings H. Gimblett, not out 40 E. Hill, c Hadlee, b Cowie - -5 F. L. Angell, not out 3 Extras I Total for one wicket 49
