RED CROSS LEADER IN DOMINION PAYS VISIT TO WANGANUI
Pleasure at the formation of a cadet unit in Wanganui was expressed by Mr. M. S. Galloway, of Wellington, secretary-general of the New Zealand Red Cross Society when he paid a brief visit to the city yesterday. He said that the organisation expected much from the cadets in the future.
The need for more and more trained men was stressed by Mr. Galloway, who said that there was a need for the close co-ordination of all Red Cross units in training and field work Expressing appreciation of the work of the Red Cross in Wanganui, he said that the inaction of the immediate post-war period had now been com pletely overtaken. All voluntary organisations, said Mr. Galloway, were up against the same problem of public apathy. This was a difficult problem but with active committees in the sub-centres, much could be done to rebuild the strength which existed during the war. Red Cross activity did not end with the cessation of hostilities, for there were large peace time commitments that have to be met. Mr. Galloway intimated that he had just received from the Scottish branch of the British Red Cross Society a letter of thanks for gifts of food and clothing received during the year for distribution among the sick and distressed. The letter was signed by Lord Kinnaird, chairman of the Scottish council. Mr. Galloway returned to Wellington last evening.
