TEACHERS WANTED FOR COUNTRY SCHOOLS IN THE WANGANUI DISTRICT
While there is a general portage of primary school teachers in the Wanganui Education Board’s district, particularly in the small country schools, the hoard has been able to keep these schools open with difficulty, a reporter was told yesterday.
The position has been eased to some extent by the use of married women teachers in relieving capacities in the town schools, these women responding splendidly Io a recent appeal by the board for them to accept this type of work.
Sole teacher schools in the country districts were difficult to keep staffed, it was stated, and difficulty was also experienced in securing the services of assistant mistresses for small schools. For some advertisements for minor teaching positions, the board had been unable to secure replies. To keep the schools staffed, it had been necessary to employ uncertified teachers in a number of cases. The shortage of teachers is expected to become more acute throughout the district as the year progresses.
