Marton Old Boys Again Lucky To Preserve Their Unbeaten Record
MARTON, May 28 (OC).—Marlon Ohl Boys seniors were hard pressed to retain their unbeaten season's record today, when KanKUtahi provided the leaders with their stillest opposition to date. Only one try was scored during the. 80 minutes' play, and that went to th e credit of a Rangatahi player, all the Ohl Boys’ points coining from penalties. In the Imai 15 minutes of play Rangatahi dill everything but score, and Old Boys were considered lucky to leave the field victorious. As Old Boys juniors and thirds also won, the club had another 100 per cent, success, and these three teams still remain undefeated Athletic scored a run-away win over Ohingaiti, at Marton. In this game an Athletic forward was ordered oft the field by the referee. G. Sherlock, the AH Black trialist and representative full-back, did not turn out for Athletic. He has decided now to play in Manawatu and today played for Palmerston North Technical Old Boys. Rain fell this morning, hut stopped before play began, and although the hail was greasy early in the game, there was not enough rain to affect the play to any great extent. Results:— Senior. Two penalties, kicked by I. Stewart, paved the way for Old Boys’ victory over Rangatahi, who countered with a try scored by B. Blunden. There was considerable foot tripping and other obstructions in this game, the chief offenders being Rangatahi, who were penalised frequently. The losers held a territorial advantage throughout, and it was only a stout defence displayed by Old Boys that stopped Rangatahi scoring more than once. The first spell was very ragged and ended in Old Boys leading by three to nil. There was a better standard in the second half and both packs played hard, solid football. Rangatahi dominated the lineouts and scrums and in the latter part of the game had Old Boys hard pressed. ATHLETIC WIN EASILY. Athletic had little difficulty in accounting for Ohingaiti in the senior match at Marton. It was not an inspiring game and was too onesided, especially in the first spell, when Athletic ran up 17 points. Ohingaiti rearranged their side at half-time and the team played much better and actually scored more points than the winners, although they all come within the last five minutes of full-time. Athletic won the match by 23 points to eight. The winners were camped in the Ohingaiti territory for the most part of the first half and the forwards winning the ball from the scrums and lineouts with clockwise regularity, set the backs in motion, who handled the ball .crisply. It was the swift moving three-quarters that relieved the monotony of the ragged play, and in this respect the Athletic right wing, V. Stantiall, played a prominent part. His thrilling dashes down the touch-line were always dangerous and he went over for two well-deserved tries. The Ohingaiti forwards infused more vigour into the game after half-time and did not give the Athletic backline nearly as much latitude. Had Ohingaiti had a reliable goal-kicker, the margin of defeat would not have been so marked. J. Carroll, S. Lowry. R. Parkes and R. Meyrick all missing five attempts between them. The teams were: — Ohingaiti: J. Carroll; J. Hammond, B. James, J. Olsen; B. Holloway, S. Lowry; K. Smith; J. Bartlett; F. Miller, K. Meyrick. R. Parkes, T. Miller; A Brooks, N. Byrnes, L. Brooks. Athletic: C. Wilson; V. Stantiall, F. Tolley F. Towler; B. Dornbush, D. McLennan; K. Smith; P. Gibbs; D. Kinloch, H. Hamilton, P. Wigglesworth, D. Hart; H. McLean, R. Price, F. Wasson. .... ~ , Athletic scored early. A high kick was misjudged by Olsen, and Parkes hurriedly came to the rescue of his winger. He sent a long pass to Lowry who was well tackled. The Athletic forwards swarmed over the defence. Kinlock picking up to run 10 yards to score near the posts, but the klclt missed. A smart bout of passing led to Athletic's next try. All the backs handled. Dornbush beating his man to make the opening before unloading to rollev, to Stantiall, who scored a good trv in the corner, which Wilson con. verted. Athletic continued to press, the forwards handling well before Hart sent Hamilton over near the nosts The kick was disallowed, and Athletic led U-0. The score was soon advanced to 14 when, from a scrum near the Ohingaiti line. Athletic hook--4 nnd Smith dived over for a typical half-back trv. Just before half-time Smith scored again from a scramble near the line after a good piece or nrward work by Hart.—Athletic 17, Ohingaiti 0. •Spectators were speculating when play was resumed just how far Atht'e’s sco“e would soar, but Ohingaiti re-arranged their team to good pur•>ose, Smith, the half-back, going into the pack and Holloway shifting from first five-eighths to half. T. Miller, side-row forward, replaced Holloway. Smith’s presence in the forwards made a tower of difference, and with J Bartlett and L. Brooks playing t'rttc'-. Athletic did not have things all their own way. A scrum in midfield was won by Athletic and Smith cut round on the blind side to pass to McLennan to Stantiall. The winger waltzed his way tnrough a thin defence to go over for his second try. Wilson missed the kick, but made amends so far when, from an acute angle, ho kicked Athletic’s first pen-alty.--Athletic 23, Ohingaiti 0. Despite a mounting score Ohingaiti kept pegging away, and a try was the result. Holloway sent his backs away until Miller ran into a snot of bother, but his half-back was there to gather in the hall for O'sen to set sail fo r the fine. The winger was ctnvffit just as diving, but the ba’l slinned free and Hollowav nounced on it to score Ohin-aiti’s first try, amid hearty cheers from their sunnorters. This stirred the visitors and the forwards '-urged upfield in a great foray, for Smith to score near the posts. Carrol! kicked the goal. The game endefl: Athletic 23. Ohingaiti 8. Mr. R. Penn refereed.
