Brigadier Andrew, V.C., Presents Earl Roberts Shield To M.D.H.S.

The unique distinction of winning the Earl Kobeits Imperial Challenge Shield lor the second time in succession, thus creating an Empire record, was commented upon by Brigadier L. W. Andrews, V.C, D. 5.0., Officer Commanding the Central Military District, when presenting the snield and medals to the Marton District High School cadet team at a ceremony held at the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. Owing to being called away on duty to the United Kingdom, the Chief of the General Staff, Major General K. L. Stewart, was unable to be present as intended. Prior to presenting the shield Brigadier Andrews gave a short history of the trophy and said that last year’s score by the Marton cadets of 307 out of 320 was the highest recorded. New Zealand had won the trophy on only seven occasions. The competition demanded team spirit, a physical standard above the average, a steady hand and a ciear eye, said Brigadier Andrews. Sound coaching was also required and he congratulated Lieutenant J. M. Grant, officer commanding the school unit, and Warrant Officer D. J. Abel, who had coached the team.

Brigadier Andrews congratulated Warrant Officer R. Ward, team leader, on his team’s performance and presented medals to the boys. The winning team was Warrant Officer R. Ward, Warrant Officer R. McChesney, and Sgts D. Sutcliffe, B. Bertram, and N. Mahoney. Congratulations to the school team also came from the chairman of the school committee, Mr. A. S. Todd, the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr. W. B. Tennent, and the headmaster, Mr. A. Thompson. As Brigadier Andrews arrived he received the general salute from a cadet guard of honour drawn up in front of the school cadet company. Later he inspected the cadet unit in company with Captain J. Malcolm, Wanganui Area Officer, and Mr. A. Thompson, headmaster. TWO LEADING HOCKEY TEAMS HAVE NARROW VICTORIES. Both the two leading senior A women’s hockey teams in Rangitikei— United and Te Kauwau—had very narrow wins on Saturday, each having only one goal to spare when fulltime was called. Te Kauwau shot their winning goal 3 seconds before the final whistle. In the senior B grade, Rata again rqn into double figures, this time at the expense of Swifts. Rata in every game so far have not scored under 10 goals in any match and have not had a goal scored agaist them. In three matches this side has scored 32 goals. Bulls, the only other unbeaten team in this grade, had their high scoring checked, winning from Tuis by the odd goal in seven. Bulls, like Rata, have been piling on the goals and to date have scored 29 for four against. Results were:— Senior A: United 4, v. Huimal 3; Athletic 8, v. Ohakea 0; Te Kauwau 3, v. Hunterville 2; Tuis 4, v. Swifts 1. Senior B: Huia 9, v. Huntervllle 3; Rata 11, v. Swifts 0; Bulls 4, v. Tuis 3; Athletic a bye. Mem’s match. Marton 3, v. Rovers 2. United were rather fortunate to come out with a win over Huimai at Kakariki. The home team had all the better of the first snell and led at the interval by 3-1. J. Judd who had filled the centre forward berth with conspicuous success in the first spell, went into centre half after the interval for the purpose of stiffening the defence, but the scheme did not work with the • success anticipated, and whereas Mrs. Judd scored all Huimai’s goals in the first spell, none was secured in the second. On the other hand, United’s defence did not have a dangerous centre forward to contend with, while the United ferwar • nlayed with more cohesion and three goals came their way. J. Judd was again outstanding, while P. McNae, the right wing for Huimai, used her speed to advantage. Some good saves in the goal were made by P. Petersen. J. Paterson, who scored two of United’s goals, was the pick of the side but all the othnr members played well as a team. L. Paterson and J. Kinloch were responsible for the winner’s two goals. It was a good fast game, and there was nothing much between the two elevens.

A wonderful defence was shown by Hunterville in their match at Marton against Te Kauwau. At half-time Te Kauwau led by 2-1. Te Kauwau held the territorial -advantage throughout, but Hunterville’s two goals were the result of two excellent breaks bv E. Hansen (inside left) who was credited with one of the goals, the other coming from the stick of B Wallis. Only l a sound defence by the two full-backs I and the goalie. N Lound. who revealed somethin" like representative form, kept Te Kauwau’s score down to three, scored by K, Tavlor (2) and L. Lumsden, the last mentioned scooting her’s just on time to snatch victory. INTER-CL’’’’ HARRIER RACE WON BY FE’LDING.
