CHOICE OF MEN FOR THE MINISTRY

Synod Debates Best Means Of Making Selections WELLINGTON, (PA). —The General Anglican Synod today discussed the report of a commission set up to consider the best means of selecting candidates for the ministry, in which concern was expressed at the acute shortage of clergy. In practice, the report stated, selection of candidates was left almost entirely in the hands of several bishops. Notwithstanding, their independence, some kind of uniform practice was considered desirable, and the commission thought it should not be open to an applicant who was refused ordination in one diocese, to approach the bishop of another. On a division, a motion by Archdeacon Houghton, of Auckland, that the commission's report be adopted, was lost, the bishops voting against it. though clerical and lay voters approved.
