ALL-AMATEUR BOXING TOURNAMENT FOR WANGANUI THIS MONTH

The Wanganui Boxing Association got away to a good start when it recently opened the 1949 season with a professional contest in the Opera House. Don Murray (Wanganui) registered a good win against Bob Brown (Auckland). Murray, who was making his debut into the professional ranks, used his hands to advantage and scored when every opportunity offered. His next contest will bo watched with interest. . It is the intention of the association to put on an all amateur tournament on May 23. The next professional fixture will be between Don Murray and an opponent yet to be selected. Roy Forward, former Wanganui champion featherweight, is coaching some boys at Mangamahu, and is seeking a match for a promising bantamweight he has under his care. The boy will be matched at the next Wanganui tournament. The handsome shield donated by Mr. E. Card will be competed for at an interprovincial tournament between Main Trunk, Manawatu, Taranaki and Wanganui, to be held later in the season. Brown and Barlow have opened their boxing school in the new athletic gymnasium on Cook’s Gardens. Efforts are being made to open schools in Aramoho and Castlecliff. The return world featherweight championship bout between. Sandy Saddler (holder) and Willie Pep (challenger) was a triumph for brains over brawn. Pen won the decision and the title and made a new record by being the first featherweight to win his title back. Gate returns were a world record for a featherweight contest, being nearly 90,009 dollars. The battle was hard and fast. After the contest Pep had to have 11 stitches inserted in cuts under and around the eyes. The third contest between this pair will probably be held in the open and is expected to break new records in attendance and gate takings. The Alabama Kid has been doing well since being deported from Australia, but recently he got too am- . bilious and met Archie More, rated 1 third best. Fight-heavyweight. The Kid was knocked out in four rounds.
