Repairs To Siding
Authority for the maintenance branch of the Railways Department to go ahead with repairs to the Rangitikei County Council’s siding from the main line at Kakari-ki to the crushing plant, at an estimated cost of £346, was given by the council at its monthly meeting in Marton yesterday . The district civil engineer of railways. Mr. H G. Stevens, advised that the siding was in poor condiiton anil unsafe for the department’s rolling stock. It was estimated that the repairs would take 800 man hours, which, with materials, would bring the cost to £346. If the council carried out the work with its own labour, the cost would be reduced by £261. ‘‘lt is impossible for us to do this job,” said the county engineer, Mr. H. Murray Reid. "We could supply two men. but this is specialised work and if we did have a gang it would be sliMver. I fail to see how we would save more than £2OO. “In places the siding track was very low and covered with water, but ballast from the crushing plant would be made available for lifting the line. The council agreed that the department should do the work.
