Patea-Waitotara Rabbit Board Reduces Rates

A reduction of 33 1-3 per cent, on last year’s rates was decided upon at a recent meeting of the Patea-Waito-tara Rabbit Board. The reduction was made because less staff will be required during the current year to deal with the menace. For the greater portion of last year the board employed 13 men, while this year provision has been made tor the full time employment of 7 men. Last year’s rates were double those of the previous year. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £723 as at March 31, 1949. compared with £243 the previous year. The board’s estimates this year provide for an estimated expenditur of £4OOO. The receipts are estimated at £4780. This year’s rates have been levied as follow: Cattle, 2zd on 46,750; sheep, Bd on 657,264. The minimum rate is 10s. The rates for 1945-49 were:—Cattle, 3«d on 48,353; sheep, 2d on 653.000. The minimum rate was 10s. Included in the estimated expenditure is £245 for the wages of 7 men and £570 for allowances payable to these men. Accommodation and other materials will absorb £460.
