Misleading Circular As To Membership
WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —ln a statement issued today, Mr. Bockett, Secretary of Labour, said his attention had been drawn to a circular letter issued to carpenters and joiners and machinists in Auckland (56 mile radius) area in which it is stated that before a new Auckland Carpenters and Joiners and Joiners’ Machinists Union could be registered it would be necessary for that union to have in its membership two-thirds of the whole of the carpenters and joiners and joiners’ machinists in the 56-mile area from the Auckland Chief Post Office.
Mr. Bockett stated it was not necessary for the new union to have in its membership two-thirds of the workers in the area concerned before registration could he granted by the Registrar of Industrial Unions, ana Phat statements in the circular to this effect were, therefore, entirely incorrect and misleading. The only prerequisite to registration of a new union was the consent of the Minister of Labour pursuant to sub-section 4 of section 2 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act, 1939.
