ARGENTINE AND CHILE WILL DEFEND CLAIMS IN ANTARCTIC AREA

BUENOS AIRES, May 1 (Recd. 8 pm).—President Peron declared today that Argentina and Cmle are capable of defending their claims in the Antarctic area. He said the only other claims Argentina recognises in tne Antartic region are those of Chile Peron, who was addressing the opening session of Congress, said any study of the possible use of the Antarctic for strategic reasons would not be tolerated by Argentina unless it was based on the premise that the Argentine and Chilean claims were valid.

Peron read a 20,000-word message to a joint session of the two Houses of Congress. His wife was present. Forty-six Opposition members in the Lower House boycottec the session. Peron announced that Argentina would continue to nationalise all “public services.’’ He declared the present owners would receive prompt and adequate compensation. Peron's list did not include meat packing firms and oil companies, of which a number an owned by the United States, Britain and Holland. Peron said nationalisation would be carried out by direct purchase contract between the Government and private owners.
