Two State Mines Near Ohura Will Be Idle Today

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night (PA) —The two State coal mines near Ohura will be idle tomorrow. The employees of the Waitewhena open cast mine adhering to their decision made on Thursday, did not return to work today, the first working day since Easter. Although the day shift worked today, the employees of the Tatu mine later decided to cease work also. Altogether about 132 men are involved and the total loss in production will be more than 400 tons daily.

Notice was given to the manager of the Tutu mine this morning that no further shifts would be worked once the day’s shift left. No indication was given of when the men were likely to return to work. It is understood .hat there will be a combined meeting of both the Waitewhena and Tatu mines on Thursday when the dispute will be discussed.

The strike at Waitewhena is the first since the open cast mining operations began there in July, 1946 Employees of the Ministry of Works, together with those of a private contractor whose fleet of trucks transport coal to the special railway siding two miles from Ohura are also involved because they are members of the Waitewhena Miners’ Union The cause of the dispute was hot made public tonight.
