Gonville Narrowly Retains Hurn Cup
The last Hurn Cup match of the season was played yesterday on the Gonville Bowling Club’s green, a Feilding rink being defeated by the holders. The green was in excellent order and the weather ideal, a splendidly contested game with an exciting finish being witnessed by a fair-sized gallery. The result was in doubt until lhe last bowl had been played, leaving Gonville winners by one point. Feilding led 7-4 with seven ends gone, but the home team scored four on the next. This was followed by a brace and three to the challengers, the board reading 12-9 in their favour after 10 ends. Two singles, a three, and a four to the holders made their tally 17 against 12 on the 14th. On each of the next three ends Feilding scored a brace, and with four ends to play they were one up—lB to 17. A brace to Gonville followed, the challengers retaliating with a brace and a three to be four up on the 20th. (23-19). At this stage the prospects of Gonville retaining the cup did not look very rosy, as the visitors had been playing particularly well as a team, a feature being consistently' good drawing all round. On the final end, however, the lead, second and third of the Feilding rink all failed to draw up to form and their skii> was live-down at the change over. Rogers failed to alter the position, being a trifle short with his first and a shade too wide with bis last bowl, Gonville thus winning 2-1 to 23. • Teams were.- Felidng: 11. Walker. F Hewitt, G. Packer and L. Rodgers. Gonville; P. B. Anderson, C. Stewart, p, j. Mailman, D. J. Armstrong.
