STATE HOUSING PROJECT FOR 40 DWELLINGS TAIHAPE, Last Night (OC).—Taihape’s latest State housing project, which provided for the erection of 40 dwellings in Goldfinch Street, and at least six in Ellis Road will help to meet a situation that is acute throughout the Dominion. It is understood that four of the State , houses in Goldfinch Street will be I ready for occupation soon, and that two of the lour newly-erected homes in Ellis Road have already been allotted to tenants. A fifth Government house in Ellis Road is at present under construction. WAR MEMORIAL. What will be the form of Taihape’s memorial to its sons and daughters who lost thei r lives in the recent world war? The question is to be decided by postal ballot and at least lour different schemes are under consideration.
Some favour a memorial park in the Main South Road (sections 81 and 82) while others support a proposal
for a community centre. Adherents of a rose garden memorial and also those favouring a swimming baths project are pressing their respective claims. The protagonists of the various schemes have, it is understood, been invited to submit a report amplifying and setting out the advantages of their particular proposal. When these reports have been received arrangements will be made to hold a postal ballot to decide the issue. MOTOR CAMP POPULAR. Set in natural sylvan surroundings on the main nortn road near tne Hautapu River bridge, Taihape’s motor camp has been Lne subject oi much favourable comment from passing motorists who have had occasion to use the electric coo King facilities and other conveniences that have been provided for the motoring public. 'The camp is regarded as one ox the most modern and picturesque in New Zealand for a town the size ox Taihape. PERSONAL. Mr. Fred Fleming, formerly of Taihape, is now attacned to the ininformation section of the i J rime Minister's Department and recently accompanied an eminent American authority on flora and fauna on« a week’s visit to Kapiti Island. Mr. Fleming subsequently wrote an article of historical interest dealing with the background ox the island. Before the war Mr. Fleming was on the literary staff of tne ' Auckland Star,” and after returning from overseas he served in a similar capacity on the “J. Force Times” till it ceaseu publication some months ago on the return of the N.Z. troops from Japan.
Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Pryor of Stratford wei’e visitors to Taihape for Easter accompanied by their two children.
Monsignor Connolly, of Wellington, formerly of Taihape, was amongst the visi/jrs at the umatane sports on Easter Saturday. Members stood in silence at the annual meeting of the Taiiiape R.S.A. as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr. C. W. Newport, a former president of the association. Mr. J. R. Corston, of Tauranga, a former resident of Taihape, was here for Easter.
