Jack Cann Wins Famous Stawell Gift In Great Race

MELBOURNE, April 18 (Recd 1C pm).—Jack Cann of Broken Hill today won the rich Stawell Gift in the closest finish in the history of the race, only 27 inches separated the winner and the last of the five finalists.

The Australian sprint champion, John Stoney, of St. Hilda in finishing third, 10 inches behind Cann ran nine yards 35 inches inside even time —only one inch short of Jack Donaldson's world record made in Sydney in 1911. Results: J. Cann (Broken Hill) 84 yards 1, P. Judd (South Australia) 71 yards, 2, J. Stoney (St. Kilda) 2 yards 3. Won by four inches, with six inches between second and third. Time, 11 13-16.
