Wanganui Y.M.C A Easter Trip To Taupo And Back

“We had perfect weather for th* whole of our stay at Taupo and return trip though it was raining when we left Wanganui on Friday morning,” said the Rev. Stuart Wyness, the chaplain of the Wanganui Y.M.C.A. last night when the touring party returned. With gear and food for the weekend the party filled a large truck and made a comlortable trip to Taupo arllv.ng at 2.30 p.m. Brief halts were made at Taihape and Turangi where members called at Mr H. G. Horsleys holiday residence. The Saturday sight-seeing tour covering Wairakei thermal valley, the Aratiatia rapids and Huka falls were iilmed in colour. In the evening the party visited the thermal baths which were originally developed by the Armed constabulary of the district in the sixties. Yesterday morning cooks were on the job at 4.30 a.m. in a hard frost so that the party could be on the road for the return trip by 7 a.m. vie National Park, the Chateau and Pipiriki. Mr. Wyness said Ruapehu presented a wonderful sight first seen from just past Roto Aira. Mt. Egmont was also clearly visible on the right. At the Chateau several boys in the party made close acquaintartce with snow for the first time. From Pipiriki a special trip was made up-river to the drop scene. Later the party resumed their journey down the River Road arriving at 6.45 p.m. On Good Friday, Mr. Wyness said, he conducted a brief service and on Sunday the party paraded for a service conducted by the Rt. Rev. G. J. Laughton. Good organisation and co-operation made the trip very enjoyable said the informant. Mr. Wyness expressed appreciation of Messrs. Ivo Davey tWanganui Red Cross) and D. C. Begg whose assistance was invaluable as directors of the camp and in catering arrangements. The film library of the Y.M.C.A. will benefit from the tour by the addition of of some hundred feet ot colour film. A further trip to Ruapehu has been planned for the future by some senior members of the party.
