Tennis At St. John's; Defeat Of Seeded Players!

Surprise defeats of the seeded men players and members of the Christie Cup team, were features of the St. John's Tennis Club’s annual hard court tournament which was continued on Saturday and yesterday. J. McKenzie, M. Rountree and O. Welsh were all defeated by less favoured players. McKenzie and Rountree were beaten by intermediate players, but Welsh lost to T. N. HayCampbell, an experienced player, who showed his best form of the season. The four men semi-finalists are K. Mahoney, G. Bristol, N. Mclntyre and Hay-Campbell. The tournament was favoured by glorious sunshine on Saturday and yesterday, which was in direct contrast to the inclement weather on Friday. However, in the latter part of Saturday and yesterday' there was a cold nip in the air, which made conditions similar to those experienced in the winter season. The tournament will be continued today at 9 p.m., when the main matches will be men's singles semifinals. MAJOR UPSET. The major upset of the tournament was when Bristol defeated McKenzie 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Bristol is the top intermediate player in Wanganui. McKenzie, a member of the Christie Cup team, won the men's singles at last year’s Easter tournament. Bristol is playing good tennis at the present time and is .a bright prospect for future Wanganui representative teams. McKenzie lacked his usual accuracy. On yesterday’s play, however, he lost to a superior opponent. Another upset occurred when HayCampbell deleated the second seeded entrant, O. Welsh. Hay-Campbell made few mistakes. His passing shots and overhead were good and he varied the pace of his game. Welsh was unable to settle down against his steady opponent. G. Wellwood, who is the second ranked intermediate player, played steady tennis to defeat the Christie Cup player, M. Rountree. Wellwood led 5-3 in the first set, but lost the next three games and the set. However, he outplayed Rountree, in the next two sets to win 6-0, 6-3. Wellwood did not hit the ball hard, but his placements and passing shots generally had Rountree in trouble. The forceful Gonville player, Mctyre, was extended by the veteran, Lampe, who varied his play well to force his younger opponent into errors. In the third set Lampe could not maintain his good play and McIntyre won the set 6-2. There was nearly another upset when Wellwood played Mahoney, who is considered to have a good chance of winning the title. Mahoney won the first set 6-2. He appeared to ease up in the second set. Wellwood was placing the ball accurately and narrowly won the set 6-5. Wellwood gained a 2-0 lead in the final set, but Mahoney came on to his game again to win 6-3. WOMEN’S SINGLES HIGHLIGHT. Highlight of the women’s singles event was the grand display by the 14-year-old player, Miss J. Everett, who was narrowly beaten by Miss F. Jones, a Christie Cup player and runner-up in the residential championship. Miss Everett maintained an accurate attack on Miss Jones’ backhand. She drew her opponent into the net with drop shots and then used well-placed lobs. It was only the experience of Miss Jones that prevented Miss Everett from gaining a win, which had it happened, would have been the upset of the 1948-49 Wanganui tennis season. Another 14-year-old player. Miss P. Nettleton, gained a well-merited win over Miss V. Pritchard. The match was evenly contested and the result could have gone either way. However, it was pleasing to see the younger player win. Misses Everett and Nettleton play very good tennis for 14-year-old players. If they are handled right and given every opportunity, they should leach a standard above that at present among Wanganui women players. Results: — MEN’S SINGLES. First round: G. Wellwood beat J.
