Qualified Solicitor And Accountant Used Valueless Cheques
NELSON, Last Night (PA).—Stated by Detective-Sergeant Murray to be a qualified solicitor, though he had neve r practised, and to be a qualified accountant, Harold Edward Elliott, aged 56, appeared before Mr. Thompson S.M. to face five charges of having issued valueless cheques and two of having obtained credit for board and lodging by fraud. The charges related to dates between March 29 and April 8, the total amount involved being £29. Accused pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Detective-Sergeant Murray said that last year accused was employed as an accountant by a Wellington firm which changed its bankers. This left it with a cheque book for he first bank, and the accused appropriated it. When he came to Nelson the accused had £3O of his own money. He booked in at an hotel and paid his way for a few days, but began to drink heavily and then started using valueless cheques from the book he had brought with him.
Accused was sentenced to' three months gaol on the charge involving the largest amount and on each of the others he was convicted and discharged.
