New President Welcomed By Wanganui Townswomen’s Guild

Before welcoming the members of the Townswomen’s Guild yesterday, the new president, Miss A. H. Cole, was presented witn a shoulder spray and welcomed to the chair by Mrs J. C. Batt, the former president. Reference was made to the passing of two foundation members, Miss McBeth and Mrs Butcher, and all stood in silence as a mark of respect. Correspondence included a reply from the City Council re the request that the bus from St. John’s Hill at 2 p.m. be diverted to the Public Library. The council considered this would be impossible. Mrs Batt reported that the mailer had come before the National Council and that a deputation is to wait on the council.

Speaking of the guild link in England, the president said there are 1016 guilds in Britain and they have Government recognition and receive a grant from the Government. Representatives had been sent to Germany and a Townswomen’s Guild had been started there on similar lines to the English organisation. It was reported that 18 cakes of soap had been sent to the English link.

It was agreed to have a stall at the Faddy's Market to be organised by the Old Folks’ Association. The secretary was asked to s'end letters of good wishes and hen voyage to Miss James and Miss F. Sim. who are leaving shortly for overseas.

Mrs J. C. Wickham gave a talk on “Old Identities of Wanganui,” and told of the simple pleasures and homely life of the children in her young days. Miss Cole thanked the speaker for her very interesting address. Songs by Mrs L. king and Mrs Palmer added to the enjoyment of the afternoon.
