SENIOR A AND B GRADE HOCKEY THIS SEASON OPENING ON APRIL 30
A decision to open the hockey season in Rangitikei on Saturday, April 30, with a seven-a-side tournament for the Linkilield Rose Bowl on the Marton Centennial Park, was made at the annual meeting of the Rangitikei Women’s Hockey Association in Marton on Tuesday night. Nominations for the tourney, which is to be played in two sections, close on April 23. The club competitions are to commence on May 7. The meeting further decided to conduct senior A and B grade competitions this season, on the motion of Mr. A. E. Giacie (Feilding) and Mr. V. Hodder (Feilding). An amendment moved by Mr J. Sutton (Athletic) anil seconded by Mr. F. M. Henderson (Te Kauwau) that senior A and junior grade competitions be played, the same as last year, was defeated.
Despite heavy commitments, the association concluded the season with a profit of £l6, according to a linancial statement submitted by the secretary, Mrs D. Gardiner. The association commenced the year with a credit of £l6B. Total receipts amounted to £461, the main sources of revenue being the profit on the Australian match (£153), players' levies (£103), gate takings from Marton Park (£39). Expenses amounted to £445, the biggest item being the cost of sending the representatives to the Dominion tournament at Dunedin (£2851. The association ended the year with a credit balance of £lB4.

Shelton, W. G. Aitken, E. O. Pryce, J. Grillin, F. Tolley and Rev. N. Williams; emergency committee, Messrs Hunt, Aitken, Mesdames Gardiner and I. Hammond; management committee, Mrs I. Hammond (United), Mrs. E. Hansen (Hunterville), Miss M. Pryce (Tuis), Miss F. Foss (Hula), Mrs. H. V. Hodder (Swifts), Mrs. C. M. Gainey (Bulls), Mr. F. M. Headerson (Te Kauwau), Mrs. E. Anderson (Huimai), Mrs. N. Signal (Rata) and Mr. J. Sutton (Athletic). Permission was granted the Athletic and United Clubs to practice on Centennial Park, Marton, on Sundays up to 10.30 a.m. An application from the Ohakea Air Force team to play in Manawatu this season was deferred pending further information. A letter before the meeting stated that a team had been formed at the Air Station, but owing to transport difficulties into Rangitikei it would be more convenient to play in Manawatu. The Te Kauwau Club was granted permission to play Levin in a practice match on April 23. MARTON SCHOOL CADETS CONGRATULATED. Congratulations 'to the Marton School cadet team on winning, twice in succession, the coveted Empire trophy for school cadet rifle shooting, the Earl Roberts Shield, were extended by the president of the.Marton R.S.A., Mr. G. H. Denbow, at the annual meeting last night. “We are optimistic in assuming that the donating of the R.S.A. Shield to local school cadets for competition on the range has helped in a little way towards the efficiency demonstrated by the successful Earl Roberts trophy team,’’ said Mr. Denbow, who wished the school even more success in the future. MARTON COMPOST CLUB ENDS YEAR WITH MEMBERSHIP OF 50. A successful year was reviewed by the retiring president of the Marton Humic Compost Club, Mrs. H. B. Bayley, at the annual meeting this week. It was stated that the membership had been maintained at 50. The balance-sheet disclosed that the club ended the year with a credit balance of £27 9s 6d. Main source of revenue came from the flower show, which showed a profit of £l4. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. R. T. C. Scott; vicepresidents, Messrs A. Gibson, J. R. L. Stanford. A. Strawbridge, F. Gabites, Mrs. J. M. Grant, Misses M. Howard and Miss D. Awdry; secretary, Mr. F. L. Nicol. The appointment of a committee was held over until a later meeting. The programme for Hie coming year was discussed and arranged.
