SETTLERS AT TANGIMOANA WANT STREET LIGHTS

A petition signed by some 44 settlers of Tangimoana, a popular beach resort, at the mouth of the Rangitikei River, requesting that provision be made for street, lighting at the settlement, came before the monthly of the Manawatu County Council this week. It was dangerous to go out at night, said Mr. J. Coker, on behalf of the petitioners. He spoke of the growth of the settlement and instanced the increased school roll, claiming that the i>me had arrived when consideration should be given the question of making provision for adequate street lighting The matter was referred to Cr. N. L. Remnant, who is to interview settlers on the subject of street lighting. NO FACILITIES AT CENTENNIAL PARK WORRIES HOCKEY ASSN. The need for the Marton Combined Sports Society to treat as a matter of urgency, th? erection of conveniences and the provision of dressingroom accommodation at Centennial Park this winter, was stressed bv the retiring president, Miss M. Middlemiss, at the annual • meeting of the Rangitikei Women’s Hockey Association on Tuesday night. As Rangitikei would probably be faced with a heavy representative programme on its home ground, the association would have to push hard to have the facilities provided, said Miss Middlemiss. Combined Sports planned a building containing conveniences but this had been in the planning stage for a considerable time. A building permit was available but members would realise theft a considerable time might elapse before the building was erected, said Miss Middlemiss. She understood that the society intended providing temporary accommodation. “I notice Combined Sports are talking about building a £12,000 community centre, but we haven’t even been able to get a £l2 building,” said Miss M. Wilkie.

Miss Middlemiss hinted that unless the Hockey Association could be provided with some facilities at Centennial Fark they would have to go back to Marton Park. She also commented upon the unsatisfactory nature of the entrance to the ground. The meeting decided to appoint. Messrs C. Hunt (president), W. G. Aitken,’ Mesdames D. Gardiner and I. Hammond as a sub-committee to wait on the Combined Sports Society with reference to providing some facilities at Centennial Park. BOROUGH MAINTENANCE

Ten water leaks which developed in the Marton mains last month were repaired, reported the borough overseer, Mr. W. R. Brant, to the monthly meeting of the Marton Borough Council last night. Two water services were renewed and one sewerage and three water connections installed. The bridges on Station Road, Kensington Road, Hawkestone Road and Calico Line were painted. Twelve chains of Marumaru Street were patched, tarred, chipped and completed, reported the overseer. Five chains in Russell Street were also treated. Water tables and drains had been cleaned out in several streets. Work had been carried out on Marton Park, the cemetery, baths grounds, Kain Avenue and the Rest Room. All syphon pipes at the Tutaenui reservoir had been dismantled and 18 feet of new eight-inch pipe installed, said Mr Brant. One of the lime tanks at the filter station became blocked. All the pipes were dismantled and cleaned out and the lime tank was also emptied and thoroughly cleaned out. The* tank was now working well, he said. The upper reservoir was holding 14 feet of water and the lower reservoir 6ft. 6in. The embankments were in good order. FOOD FOR BRITAIN The Marton R.S.A. had continued a small but regular supply of food I parcels to ex-servicemen in Britain, said the president, Mr. G H. Denbow, at the annual meeting last night. Thanks were due, he said, to a lady member, Miss Jean Stewart, who organised “Food for Britain ’ dances at Tutaenui. the proceeds from which enabled the branch to send extra parcels, especially at Christmas time when they were most appreciated by the recipients. PERSONAL. Mr. C. C. Hunt (Marton) was elected president of the Rangitikei Women’s Hockey Association at the annual meeting on Tuesday night. Appreciation of the services the retiring president (Miss M. Middlemiss) had given during her term of office was placed on record. Mr. A. B. Marshall was elected chairman of the Marton Branch of the New Zealand National Party at the annual meeting held this week. Mr. J. Toban, who has been on the staff of the Marton Post Office for some months, has been transferred to Wanganui and commenced his new duties this week. Mr. R. T. C. Scott was elected the new president of the Marton Humic Compost Club al the annual meeting this week. GUN CUB MEMBERS TO VISIT BIORRINS VILLE. Seven members of the Marton Gun Club will visit Morrinsville at the week-end to participate in the open shoot organised by the Morrinsville Gun Club. The shoot will be for £ISG and a £35 trophy. Among the Marton party will be Mr. and Mrs. N. Crabb, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Lampp, Messrs. W. Gatrell, I. Barton and A. J. Petrie. EASTER SATURDAY CRICKET. The final cricket match of the season will no played at Marton on Eastet Saturday, when a team captained by Dr. G. Whitta, of Manurewa, will play a Marton eleven. The Manurewa team plays in the Auckland Cricket Association’s competitions and the members acquitted themselves very well during the past season. The team te at present on a short tour.
