Wanganui Plunket Society Garden Party Raises £113
Despite the unfavourable weather on Saturday afternoon, the garden party held by the Plunket Society at the residence of the president, Mrs. 11. D. Robertson, Oakland Avenue, St. John’s Hill, proved a success. The sum of £ll3 was raised. The function was opened by Mrs. W. T. Simmonds, of Patea. In urging the people to support the society, Mrs. Simmonds said what a wonderful thing Wanganui had in the Karitane Hospital and stressed what an asset it was to. the city. Among the babies that had been cared for in Karitane auring the past year were 104 premature infants, and of these only eight had died. She thought this a remarkable performance. Mrs. Simmonds referred to the donor of the home, the late Mr. J. T. Stewart, who gave it for the benefit of the children of Wanganui and the district, and said she felt sure that public spirited citizens would willingly support this good work being done by the Plunket Society. Committee members were very gratified at the public response and the many donations of saleable goods sent in for the stalls. Each suburban committee took a stall as follows: — Sweets, Aramoho; cakes, Wanganui East; ice-cream and soft drinks, Gonville; and in charge of gate, Durie Hill. The town committee had charge of the rest of the stalls, and St, John s Hill members were responsible for the afternon tea, which was served indoors. Because of the uncertainty of the weather the stalls were set up on the wide veranda. Out of doors games were managed by some of the husbands. Mrs. Robertson moved about among the people chatting to them and also welcomed several visitors from the Patea and Marton branches.
