FAITH IN ATLANTIC PACT REAFFIRMED BY PRESIDENT TRUMAN

(N.Z. P. A.—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 (Rec. 6 p.m.)—Reaffirming faith in the proposed North Atlantic Security Pact, President Truman said today that he still adhered to the views set out in his inaugural message of January 20. The President said he still thought the United States, in conjunction with other North Atlantic Powers, could (in the words of his inaugural address) provide unmistakeable proof of a joint determination of free countries to resist armed attack from any quarter. Mr, Truman said there was nothing mysterious about the proposed pact, adding that the United States’ policy had been clearly expressed by Mr. Acheson yesterday. The President was optimistic about the United States economic outlook. He said it was nothing to be alarmed about. He thought the recent development constituted the levelling off which every one has been wishing.
