CLERICAL HELPERS FOR HEADMASTERS IN CERTAIN SCHOOLS
Approval of the employment of clerical assistants for head teachers in schools of grades VI and Vll, intermediate and normal schools and district high schools of grade V and higher at a maximum payment of 3s 4d an hour for three hours a day for 40 weeks a year was received from the Education Department at yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. The chairman (Mr W. B. Tennant) said that as the board would have to pay the salaries of the clerical employees it should decide on their appointment. “Would it b e possible to secure suitable assistants?” asked Dr. L. E. Jordan. The chairman said that two schools could combine and employ one assistant who would be thus given fulltime employment. “You will find there are many young married women who are prepared to accept employment in the mornings or afternoons to supplement their incomes. You would be surprised at the number of them available.” Mr F. C. Jannings said that a knowledge of typewriting was essential for assisting the headmasters in compiling records. Mr L. Carmine: Who is going to provide the typewriters? The chairman: Most schools already have them now. Mr Carmine: And many have not. It was decided that steps be taken by the board to fill the various positions. The chairman said the question of typewriters could be left until it arose. Mr Carmine: You will be inundated with requests.
