Cricketers Revert To One-Day Club Matches In Rangitikei
'I think it would be a retrograde step to go back to one-day cricket. It would be better to commence play at 10.30 a.m.,’’ declared Mr. R. de R. Worker at a meeting of the management committee of the Rangitikei Cricket Association on Monday night, when discussing a motion before the meeting that one-day club matches be played in the second round of the competition, the hours of play to be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mr. Worker said that since two-day cricket had been introduced, there had been a noticeable improvement in the standard of play, and lie would like to see the present system continued, an opinion which was endorsed by the secretary, Mr. R. Parkinson.
Subsequently the resolution was amended, altering the starting time from 1 p.m, to 10.30 a.m. with threequarters of an hour for lunch. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried, there being one dissentient. Early in the debate, when discussing the form the second round was to take, the secretary pointed out that seven playing Saturdays remained to the end of the season. This allowed a full round of one-day matches, or dividing the competition into two grades—with the first four teams in the first ground comprising the A grade. This would allow a complete round of two-day matchs in both grades. The general opinion was that spiiting into grades was not desired on the grounds that some of the teams placed in the lower grade were capable of defeating a team in the upper division. After further discussion it was moved by Mr. A. B. Marshall, seconded by Mr. C. Wood, that pne-day matches instead of two-day matches be played in the second round, play to commence in the morning. This was carried. PLUNKET NURSE TO GIVE MOTHERCRAFT TALKS The Marton Plunket Nurse, Miss I. Suddaby, is shortly to commence a course of mothercraft talks for young mothers in Marton. This was reported by the secretary, Miss L. Cook, at a meeting of the Marton Plunket Society this week. These talks, added Miss Cook, had proved very useful and popular with the sub-branches in the past. Mrs. C. A. Tidy was in the chair and arrangements were made for the branch’s well-known annual effort — the street sale —which is to take place on Tuesday, March 1. Very attractive stalls and competitions are being arranged. The committee is working hard and hopes that the many young parents of the district will assist tile organisers and thus help the cause that helps them.
