Britain's Big Meat Project For Australia

MELBOURNE, Jan. 5 (Recd. 8 pm) —According to a “Herald” Special Service cable, Britain has asked for action on a big plan for development of beef production in the Northern Territory and Queensland. The cable says Sir Henry Turner, of the British Food Ministry, cabled the Australian Minister of Commerce (Mr. Pollard) asking for a reply More than two months ago Britain offered Australia a ten-year guarantee to take meat produced in these schemes, which were expected to increase exports to Britain from 150, 01)0 to 250,000 tons a year.

The "Herald” cable quotes the British Minister of Food (Mr. Strachey) as saying: “The sooner the Australian authorities agree to the British proposals, or make counterproposals, the better Britain will be satisfied, hut the final scheme will extend over years and take months to work out.” The main points at issue are the duration of the agreement, the method of capitalisation, and prices. Australia wants a 15-year guarantee.
