Club And Secretary Fined For Illegal Sales Of Liquor
AUCKLAND, Yesterday (PA).— Fines totalling £275 were imposed by Mr. J. H. Luxford. S.M., in the Police Court today on the Central Sportsmen’s Club (Inc.) and its secretary, George Douglas Purdie. aged 31. The club was charged with selling liquor on three dates in October and November. also with keeping liquor for sale. Purdie was charged with aiding the club in the commission of the offences.
The defendants pleaded guilty. Police evidence showed that on three visits to premises in Karangahape Road, the police found between 30 and 50 persons of both sexes there “Many were under the influence of liquor and some were in a drunken condition.” Sub-Inspector Munro testified “On the November visit constables saw 60 dozen empty beer bottles. This club, in 1946. was fined £5O on each of two charges.” Defending counsel said the club i started legitimately with social proi grammes, but later costly alterations I were carried out and the club tried to recoup itself. Today’s conviction i would cause a cancellation of the lease. ,
