Senior Cricket Match Develops Into A Farcical Exhibition
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PAI —A senior cricket match on Saturday between Old Boy sand East Christchurch developed into the most farcical exhibition ever seen at Hagley Park.
During the morning, one East Christchurch bowler bowled feet outside the off stump to keep the scoring rate down. Near the end of the day East Christchurch declared, leaving Old Boys one hour to score 190.
Presumably as a protest against the timing of the declaration, Old Boys’ batsmen refused to score runs and at stumps had. made a total of five (all extras) for three wickets (all lbw decisions).
At one stage fieldsmen staged a sitdown strike and there were several conferences among umpires and captains.
At the finish the East Christchurch bowlers were bowling underarm. Had the East Christchurch captain taken the team off the field he would have forfeited the game.
