Beta Ray Counter For Research Into Unseen Processes

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— Technical research with the aid of radio activity is entering a new chapter in the Dominion with the completion for the New Zealand Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Research Association of the first Beta-Ray counter to be manufactured in the country. Its interior is an intricate mass of radiotype valves and wiring. The counter will be used ot frack the course of elements, such as phosphorus, in the unseen processes of earth and planet life.

Mr. I. Crookes, chairman of the Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Research Association, said that New Zealand farm lands required regular applications of large amounts of fertiliser and the research carried out with the new instrument into the use and application of this fertiliser would enable it to be put tc the best possible use. These investigations would take some time and Dr. M. M. Burns, lecturer in Soils and Fertlisers at Canterbury Agricultural College would take up the position of Director of the association early next year. Negotiations were proceeding for a site for the laboratory, and experimental plots near Auckland Until these premises wer» ready, the counter was being used at the soil bureau, Wellington.
