Salvaging WarSunk Merchantmen
(N.Z.P.A.—Special Correspondent.) Recd. 6 p.m. London, Sept. 14. The merchantmen sunk in the battles of the ?4editerranean, including those in the Malta convoys, are to be raised. Some will be towed 1500 miies to Britain to provide materials for new ships, and to aid British industry. This salvaging is a reflection of the urgent demand for scrap needed to maintain British steel production. Salvage equipment and plant for cutting up bomb-dam-aged shipping has already been sent to Malta, where most of the tonnage cannot be refloated. Ships that can float will be tow’ed back to Britain, and sent to shipbreakers. It is stated that ships sunk in Baltic ports have already been refloated and towed to Britain and that salvage operations may later be extended to the Red Sea.
