Fined For Demanding “Key” Money
Recd. 8.20 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 14. Harcourt McLean Garden and Thomas Leslie Harvey were each fined £5O today for demanding key money for office premises. Harvey and Garden, who is the son of Mr. John Smith Garden, former member of the House of Representatives, were charged with contravening the national security regulations in that they required £6OO for key money for lease of city premises. Evidence was given that Garden told a prospective tenant that the rent was £2 9s 6d, and that the owner required an additional £6OO. Defending counsel said there would be an appeal.
