WANGANUI BASKETBALL

T.O. GIRLS PLAY WELL TO WIN FROM WAVERLEY Playing basketball of an exceedingly high standard, Technical Old Girls seniors, winners of this year's championship, defeated the vastly improved Waverley B team in the final on Saturday, to win tht Glover handicap. This is the first occasion that a senior team has ever accomplished this big task, for to give Waverley B a 12goal handicap and then defeat it, is something to be proud of. Waverley was not at full strength, but this did not detract anything from T.O G.'s win. Both teams had had a strenuous afternoon and came off with flying colours. A team that excelled itself on the day was Junior Labour League, who have never played better. They also played T.O.G. in the semi-linal, another 12 goals handicap against the winners, and lost 17 to 14.

The winners played three third grade teams, conceding to each 12 goals. They scored at a terrific pace against Woolworths, and finished up with 24 goals to their opponents' nii, after missing at least another 12 shots. It was a treat to see the three forwards in action—speed, accuracy, and perfect timing being a feature of their play. However, they found the Waverley defence a tough opposition and at times were well and truly beaten to the pass by V. Lynskey. N. Tremaine, and H. McDonald. It speaks volumes for these three players to perform so brilliantly, especially from the throw in from the back line where they were seldom beaten for the ball. Quite a few forwards in the lower grades learnt a thing or two from J. Skelsey and J. McE’arland, two of the finest representativt players ever to wear the Wanganui colours. These two players are doing a great deal to the advancement of basketball in Wanganui by turning out this season and enabling younger players to see and realise for themselves just what standard they must attain if they wish to improve their ability as players. B. Hughes would fit in perfectly with these two ex reps., just as L. Breed has done in her club. DETAILED SCORES. The semi-finals and final scores were:— 4 Semi-finals: J.L L. (handicap 12) 14, T.O.G. 17; Waverley B 10, Garments B 3 (both level); Final: Waverley B (12) 14, T.O.G. 16.
