Lyttelton Dredge To Work At Castleciiff From Next Month
Arrangements for the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s dredge Te Whaka to start dredging operations at Castlecliff on September 9 have been completed, the chairman (Mr. E. A. Millward) reported to yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board. The dredge will be at Wanganui for an indefinite period. The Union Steam Ship Co. advised the board that it was unable to carry out supervision of the construction of the board’s new dredge in the yards of Henry Robb and Co. at Leith, Scotland. The company pointed out that it had ten ships in the course of construction and could not supervise the dredge, too. An offer from a firpi to provide supervision was received and it wa i reported that inquiries were being made as to the cost of this supervision.
The Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., emnhasised the need for supervision of the construction of the dredge. Hcadded that he was not endeavouring to cast any reflection on the integrity of the firm, but it was a wise precaution which any ordinary person would take. The chairman assured Mr. Regers that the board intended to have the work supervised.
