TREMELLO, GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES WINNER A BARGAIN

L'evv hurdlers have achieved such success at an early stage in their career over the battens as has Tremello, who on Saturday spreadeaglcd the field in the Grand National Hurdles and ran home, tired horse that he was, winner of a stake of £1650 in stakes. That was a big return for a horse who, when he started in the race, was still eligible for hack hurdle events.

Tremello carried the colours of Mrs. E. M. McMillan, of Palm-! erston North, when he won the I Grand National Hurdles, but in the earlier stages of his career he was raced by Messrs. J. and L. McMillan, who had won a Wellington Cup with Don Quex. On ■ Mr. L. McMillan’s death his ' widow carried on with ownership ■ of the 1948 G.N. Hurdles winner. : When offered at tiie Trentham 1 yearling sales on behalf of his breed- i er, Mr. G. M. Currie, of Koatanui, I Tremello realised 600 guineas, and the I partnership obtained one of 1 hose sale I ring bargains for which bidders are I always so eager. The youngster was ' then a colt by Ringmaster from the Limond mare Icing, whose dam was the imported Po.ymelus mare Aspic. When raced by the partners he was trained by G. W. New, but since the autumn of last year he has been . trained by E. Temperton, also of Awapuni. It was a as four-year-old that Tre- ' mello enjoyed one of his successful i runs, winning his way out of hack ; company and making good in the j open class. Included in his successes | was the Belmont Hack Handicap at ' Trentham. and at his next start he ' won the Rangitikei Cup at Bu.ls. In the winter he carried off the honours I in the Russell Grace Handicap at ‘ Wanganui, and followed that with ' success in the Manawatu Winter Cup. j Tremello scored his first win over hurdles when lie won the Mangaatua Hack Hurdles at Woodvil.e last November after having finished fourth at Feilding earlier in the month. He beat all but Royal Moutoa in the Linton Hurdles at Awapuni and then reverted to the flat to finish third in the Christmas Handicap. At his next start he won the Pahiatua Cup, and last June he scored his second win in the Manawatu Winter Cup. He was insta led an each-way favourite for the Pukehou Hack Hurdles at the recent Manawatu Hunt meeting and beat Foxland by a neck for the major honours. Few who saw him win at Awapuni that day gave him much more than an outside chance of winning the Grand National Hurdles a fortnight later, but in the meantime he nad worked wetl, and he was sent out at a shorter price than many expected. His pace on the flat, coupled with a dashing display or fast jumping, with only a couple of minor errors, enabled him to lead all the way and last out. the journey of two and a-half miles and 160 yards in record time. Tremello is young as hurdlers go, and there should be many more good wins ahead for the Ringmaster gelding.
