£l00 Fine Imposed On Bookmaker; Sixth Appearance
A fine of £lOO was imposed by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., on Francis La Pouple, who was charged in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday with keeping a common gaming house. Mr. Salmon commented that it was defendant's sixth appearance in Court and remarked•’ "It can't go on like this, you know.”
Detective-Sergeant H. A. Hay told the Court that it had come to the knowledge of the police that defendant was carrying on a common gaming house at a house in Nelson Street. Witness and Constable C. Dudley went to the house and found that, defendant had taken £42 in bets in sums ranging from 2s 6d to £l. For defendant, Mr. C. F. Treadwell pointed out that the Grand National meeting was held that day. When a race meeting was held away from Wanganui and people wanted to bet on races at that meeting the only method of doing so was with bookmakers. In view of the meetings held that day, £42 in bets was not a large amount. Defendant had been fined £75 on his last appearance in Court, and counsel suggested that a repetition of that fine would meet the case.
