Uranium From Shale Oil Deposits In N.Z. A Possibility
(P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Aug. 3. Dr. A. M. Finlay (Govt., North Shore) gave notice in the House of Representatives today to ask the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research whether the possibi ity of extracting uranium from oil-shale deposits of the Dominion had been considered. He said uranium, vanadium and molybdenum were formerly regarded as restively worthless byproducts of the extraction of oil from sha’e, but the association of uranium with atomic research greatly enhanced its importance. It had been reported from Sweden that some shales were yielding more than 200 grammes of uranium oxide a ton, and large sums had been spent in the development of this aspect of the extraction process.
