HOUSE PAYS TRIBUTE TO FORMER JUDGE OF NATIVE LAND COURT
(P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Aug. 3. Only formal business was transacted by the House of Representatives this afternoon before the adjournment was taken until 7.30 tonignt, as a mark of respect to the late Juudge Michael Gilfedder, formerly member for Wallace. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) was in charge of the House after being absent throughout last week. Mr. Fraser, moving a resolution placing on record th’e services to the country of the late Judge Gilfedder, said the former member for Wallace was—like many of those connected with the old Liberal Party—very enthusiastic over matters dealing with social uplift and reform. ‘Tie was an enthusiastic missionary for democratic principles,” said Mr. Fraser, who added that the late Judge Gilfedder made many w/ful contributions to such pieces of legislation as the Wages Protection Bill, Government Advances to Settlers Bill, Removal of Women’s Disabilities, and Workers’ Compensation for Accident Bill. “He never spared himself,” continued Mr. Fraser, “and always wanted to give opportunity to others,” Judge Gilfedder went from success to success, particularly in the sphere ot Judge of the Maori Land Court. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) seconded the resolution aiyi associated the Opposition with the tribute paid by the Prime Minister. Mr. T. L. Macdonald ( the present member for Wallace, also paid tribute to Judge Gilfedder, ana Mr. E. T. Tirikatene (Govt., Southern Maori) the Maori people with the resolution.
The House rose at 3.22 p.m. until 7.30 p,m.
