Mr. Barnes Says He Will Present Full Facts Sunday Night

(P.A.) Auckland, June 30. The national president of the Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr. Barnes) announced today that he would present the real facts of the waterfront troubles at a public meeting on Sunday night. The union had engaged the Town Hall, and the Mayor (Mr. Allum) had agreed to preside. “We think that things aie deteriorating rapidly, and that if steps are not taken to bring reason to bear, as distinct from Ministerial dictatorship, a serious economic and industrial crisis is unavoidable,” he said. “Realising this, we are asking citizens to hear for themselves. The full facts of the present dispute will be dealt with, but tne address will also range over the whole industry.” Mr. Barnes and other Auckland branch representatives will attend a meeting of the union’s national executive in Wellington on Monday. This meeting will be followed on Tuesday by one of the union’s national council, which is expected to last for the remainder of the week. “A special meeting of the council, which consists of branch representatives from practically every port in the Dominion, is called only in a state of extreme emergency,” said Mr Barnes. The supreme authority in the union, it normally met at twoyear intervals, the next routine meeting being in December, 1949.
