Army Office Offers Explanation For Prosecuting Seaman
(P-A.) Wellington, June 30. The prosecution against a man who was charged in the Magistrates Court, Wellington, with failing to report under the National Service Emergency Regulations at the Drill Hall, Auckland, in March, 1942, was not brought by the Army, as may have appeared from statements made in (he course of the hearing, said n statement issued today from Army Headquarters. The statement pointed out that the Army's authority began when a person was attested for service. Until attestation, authority unaer the National Service Emergency Regulations could be exercised only by or on behalf of the National Service Department. Captain C. Rawley, who was reported as saying that the Army had records to show that the man did not report, was present onlv as a witness for the prosecution, the statement added. As already reported, the information was dismissed.
