UM UNLIKELY TO TAKE A HAND IN THE BERLIN CRISIS JUS! NOW

The Secretary General for United Nations (Mr. Trygve Lie) tonight abandoned any idea of putting the Berlin crisis before the Security Council at presentEarlier the State Department had declared it did not consider the time ripe for United Nations intervention. A department spokesman added that the United States Government was exploring every means of arriving at a settlement of the differences which had arisen. A French delegation spokesman said France intended to try to settle the Berlin problem by consultation with other interested Governments, and, therefore, France could not comment on Mr. Lie’s proposal until ail possible efforts to solve the problem had been made by the Powers concerned Mr. Lie said tonight: “I have been watching closely the situation in Berlin for some time, and will continue to do so. At this time I do not plan any action under Article 29 of the United Nations Charter.” Article 29 empowers Mr. Lie to bring before the Security Council any matter which, in his opinion, may threaten the maintenance of international peace.
