Former Wanganui Boy Accepted For Acting Course

A former Wanganui boy, Mr. Graeme Allwrignt, has been accepted lor an acting course at the Old Vic theatre School in London. At present residing in Wellington, Mr. Allwright hopes to begin a course in the next term, which begins on September 30. The course lasts for two years and there is a possibility of his being able to study for a further year in the advanced production or scenic design classes. The fame of the Old Vic dramatic company makes it very hard to gain acceptance to the school. Mr. Allwrignt has found, to use his own words, that it was like “storming a citadel." He first applied last year. One of the most promising young actors to play in repertory work in New Zealand in recent years, Mr. Allwright, who is only 21, has taken a number of parts in Wellington Repertory Society productions. . His last success was in Ibsen’s “Ghosts,” which was staged in April. He has also acted with the Thespians. He attended Wellington College, but it was not until after he left school that he developed an interest in the theatre. Mr. Allwright formerly lived with his parents in Wanganui, where his father was stationmaster. Miss Jacqueline Beere. of Wellington, was recently awarded a British Council Scholarship to take a production course at the Old Vic Theatre School.
