Merchant Navy Appeal The Wanganui street appeal for the Merchant Navy, held yesterday, yielded about £9O. This compares favourably with the amount collected last year. Last night Mrs. A. McPhail thanked the publi.i for its support and the collectors for their co-operation. She also thanked the R.S.A. for the use of their hall. Liaison With Commerce.

The suggestion that the farmers snould seek some form of liaison with the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce was made to yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive of Federated Farmers by Mr. C. D. Corliss. The executive decided that its secretary (Mr. F. H. Donaldson) should discuss the matter with the Chamoer of Commerce.

Customs Revenue. Customs revenue collected from all sources at the port of Wanganui last month totalled £38,549 17s. This compares with £41,521 collected in the corresponding month last year. With the object of assisting the Palmerston North Boys’ High School in raising funds to procure a set of brass band instruments, a party of 125 pupils, of the Wanganui Technical College will journey to Palmerston North this afternoon to take part in a concert to be held this evening. Members of the college orchestra, choir, and pipe band are included in the party, which will provide more than half the programme to be presented. Some members of the teaching staff will accompany the party. Milking of Sheep. “There is a good tip for the hill country farmer,” cemented a delegate at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Conference of Federated Farmers’ when the chairman of the Dairy Section (Mr- A. R. Laird) mentioned that Mr. Perry, when addressing the # Dominion conference had reported that ewes were milked in a part of France for a certain type of cheese. Mr. Laird said that the ewes were milked by hand and were bred for that purpose alone. The chairman (Mr. H. J. Donneily) added that about 2,000,000 ewes were used to produce milk in that area of France-

Catholic Rural Movement. Branches of the Catholic rural movement from Taihaoe. Palmerston North, Ashhurst. Patea and Wanganui were represented at a recent conference held in Wanganui, when progress reports were given on the success of the stock distributing scheme and of the efforts to get young people back on the land. Reports stated that the movement had had a considerable amount of success in finding positions for voung men on farms and in securing holdings for experienced returned servicemen who wanted to go farming. More than 100 heifers had been donated to the movement and distributed free to farmers, who were considered to be in need of such assistance. Court Sits At Night In order to complete a civil case by today, extended hours were necessary in the Supreme Court, Wanganui, yesterday, which sat till late in the afternoon and again last night. The case concerned a dispute over payment for carpentry and painting work at a station on the Wanganui River and occupied four sitting days when part heard in May. Mr. Justice Cornish made a special fixture for this week, but half a day was lost as the result of slips in the backcountry preventing two witnesses from reaching Wanganui by Tuesday afternoon. Yesterday His Honour intimated that as he had urgent business in Wellington tomorrow he must leave Wanganui this afternoon. In order to complete the case he was prepared to sit extended hours. Technical College. On July 8 members of the Wanganui Technical College Rugby team, and boys’ and girls’ hockey teams will travel to Wellington to play annual matches against the Wellington Technical College. On the same day the Wellington Technical College basketball and soccer teams will travel to Wanganui to play matches against Technical College teams here. Technical College soccer and basketball teams will travel to Palmerston North on July 7 to play matches against Palmerston North Technical High School. On the same day a Rugby and a girls’ hockey team will visit Wanganui from Palmerston North. On August 19, the Technical College hockey team will Play Palmerston North Boys' High School as a curtain-raiser to the representative match against the Australians in Wanganui.

Increased Representation. That the recent meat and wool conference in Wellington had increased the representation of the Wanganui, Wellington central and Manawatu districts from one representative to two representatives on the Dominion Executive was reported to yesterday’s meeting or the Wanganui Provincial Executive of Federated Farmers by the chairman, Mr. H. J. Donnelly. He said that Manawatu would have one representative and Wanganui and Wellington Centra] one representative. The suggestion was that Wanganui should have the delegate one year and Wellington Central the next. Mr. Donnelly later explained that the Wellington Central and Wanganui districts would still continue to have their individual representatives on Hie Electoral College of the Now Zealand Pnnrd.
