Old Boys Backs And Marist Forwards
PENETRATION AGAJNST LOOSE rushes. Wanganui and Old Boys had bettei backs than Marist and that accounted for their win, which was primarily to the good play of M. Hunter (first frveeighths) and L. Miller (2nd.) The winners’ forwards had sufficient Stine, about them to get a share of the ball. The Marist pack played with its traditional vim and the side was well served by its full-back, W. Mosley, whose safe handling and kicking got the greens out of a great deal ot trouble. , . x ♦ R. Bruce was the greens best attacking back but he got few chances. The teams were:—
Wanganui and Old Boys: G. Jackson; P. Bosher, N- Anderson, 1. Gritfin; M. Hunter, L. Miller; J. Bligh; R. Knofflock; D. Fitchett, P. Howie, E. Withers, B. Jones; A. Hackshaw, G. Brown, D. Scott. Marist: W- Mosley; L. Lamont, R Rasmussen, B. Corliss; R. Bruce, N. Wallace; G. Cornford; J. White; J, Heagney, M. Pettis, H. O’Leary, N. Crowley, F. Huwyler, K. Howe, J. Hooper. Referee: Mr. C- Spriggens. Bruce tried a grubber kick and Old Boys were in trouble. Their full-back was smothered and, from a scrum near the line, Heagney scored a typical Heagney try. Bruce converted — Marist 5, Wanganui and Old Boys 0. Marist were penalised shortly afterwards and Miller goaled—Old Boys 3, Marist 5.
Hunter was hurt at this stage and had to stay on the sideline for a while. Twice Old Boys’ backs came away, but the passing was across field. Miller grubber kicked and got up in time to smother the green full-back and take a Marist pass. He almost scored. A scramble developed on the line and Knofflock scored. Miller missed the kick.—Old Boys 6, Marist 5. That was the score at half-time-The Marist forwards, led by Huwyler, who was playing a great game, Pettis, and O’Leary, swept right through the Old Boys backs. Only Hunter attempted to go down to this rush and the full-back was in trouble. He speculated at the ball and missed and Corliss scored. Bruce missed the kick.—Marist 8, Old Boys 6. The greens had Old Boys in trouble two or three times with loose rushes, and Miller again stabbed through the Marist backs. Bruce fielded a ball in his own 25, ran a step or two to get into position to kick. He was tackled in deadly fashion by Hunter and Miller toed the ball over the line and scored. Miller missed the kick.—Old Boys 9, Marist 8. Hunter paved the way to another try, cutting through and going into a tackle. There were two lineouts, then a scrum, and Bosher, coming in to make an extra man in the five-eighths snapped the ball up and sent it to Hunter, to Miller ,to Anderson, who scored a determined try. Miller converted.—Old Boys 14, Marist 8Another of those devastating loose rushes by Marist had Old Boys in trouble. The full-back tried to get the ball dead, but Bruce end Rasmussen gave the pack good backing and Rasmussen scored. Mosley missed the kick.—Marist 11, Old Boys 14.
