Big Saving Of Coal By Fuel Efficiency
(P.A.) Wellington, June 25. An estimated coal saving of 30,000 tons, representing a cash saving of approximately £60,000, was made possible in New Zealand industry last year through industrialists taking advantage of the Fuel Efficiency Service, announced the Minister In charge of Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr. McCombs, tonight. The saving was obtained by the expenditure of £2500 by the department.
Operating as a section of the Dominion Laboratory, Fuel Efficiency Service officers had found that throughout industry a wastage occurred of approximately 20 per cent, of the coal consumed. “These losses can in most cases be entirely avoided if the advice and assistance which is offering is accepted by the firms concerned,” said the Minister. “The success which has attended the Service's efforts testifies to the readiness with which industrialists have welcomed the facilities provided. A conservative estimate of the average saving possible throughout the country is 15 per cent. Some 800,000 tons ot coal are consumed annually by the industry, and thus, It the recommendations of tire Fuel Efficiency Service were put into practice in the whole of industry, then at least 120,000, and possibly 200,000. tons of coal could lie saved yearly, representing £240,000 annually.
“These savings are possible without any large capital outlay or modifications of existing plant,’ concluded the Minister.
