Boxer Dies After Injury In Ring
(P.A.) Auckland, May 25. The Hawaiian-Canadian professional boxer, Joe Burns, who was injured in a light-heavyweight bout with Tommy Downes at the Town Hall on May 10, died in the Auckland Hospital tonight.
Burns struck his head on the floor when he was knocked out by Downes in the second round of their bout. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital after medical treatment in the ring and did not recover consciousness for many hours, but after several days showed slight improvement. He failed to improve further, however, and his condition became worse on Saturday.
Aged about. 22, Burns is believed to have arrived in New Zealand from Australia three months ago.
