HEAVY RAIN AND COLD WINDS
CHEERLESS DAY IN THE WANGANUI DISTRICT Heavy driving rain, which began to fall in the Wanganui district on Sunday night, continued until about the middle of yesterday morning, when there was a let up. Rain began to fad again late during the afternoon and continued steadily throughout the evening. Heavy rain was reported last night throughout the whole of the Wanganui district. The rain will be of benefit to pastures, although it is late in the season to do a maximum amount of good. Cold westerly to south-west-erly winds b.ew yesterday and made the day a very cheerless one. No reports of slips or road damage had been received last night, but it was expected that if the rain conteinued there would be damage to roads throughout inland districts. Bus services to Wanganui from Pipiriki, Raetihi and Ohakune kept to schedule yesterday, but some sections of the Wanganul-Raetihi highway were greasy as the result of the rain. Substantial rain fell at Taihape and Marton yesterday, and minor flooding occurred in some areas. Rivers and creeks along the coastal belt were reported to be above normal levels last night. It was a bleak and cheerless night, and most Wanganui residents found the fireside the most congenial place.
