Barrage Returns Good Price At Woodville

Held in ideal weather and before a very large attendance, the Woodville District Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday was a huge success, and the totalisator turnover at £55,542 10s is a record for the course, £6662 10s above the £48,850 put through at the 1947 winter meeting. Fields were large and the track in perfect order. Barrage returned a surprise double- ■ figure dividend when he won the main event, the May Handicap, and Playboy was at good odds in the open sprint. G. R. Tattersail was the most successful jockey, winning on Alumnus, Indian Song and Trafalgar Day. and W. L. Aitken won on Barrage and Field Marshal. DEVASTATING RUN Just when it seemed that Emerge was to win the May Handicap, after having run wide straightening up, Barrage came down the outside with a devastating run and scored, going away, by a neck. At the half-mile there were about half-a-dozen possibilities—Merry Robin, Emerge, Theio lyn. Audacious, Ladyship and Precedency—but only two, Audacious and Ladyship, ran it out. They were third and fourth. Ballinagh, from a bad early position, was fifth, ahead of Merry Robin and Theiolyn. When it came to racing in the Telegraph Handicap Playboy left the field behind like a good horse, having a two-length advantage over General Victory, who beat Sea Fury by a length. If there was an unlucky runner it was Sea Fury, for she had to come from nowhere. Bronstar was slow away and Full of Fun petered out with a furlong to cover. FINE STEEPLECHASE As a spectacle the Mangarawa Steeplechase was an excellent one for the big fie.d managed the easy country without great bother and for the last half-mile four runners, at least, had a winning chance. However, superior pace and clean jumping won for Vassilikos and he should soon add to his score. Just when it appeared as if Imperial Crown was going to be second Vernon came with a strong finishing run to nose him out of the money and return nearly double figures. Light Tea, High Morale and Captain Jesse were the next home. Patiently ridden, the promising novice Pimlico won the Hopeland Hurdles by four lengths, after having to make up some ground the last five furlongs. He should go on to better deeds. A bad jump went, against Rockanui, who finished on again and just headed First Act. Specialist, fourth, failed over the last 50 yards. Next to finish were Genero and Peter Brierly. THREE NOVICE DIVISIONS Three divisions contested the Novice Stakes. In the first Alumnus outstayed Philemon, who tried to lead ah the way and who just managed to hold off Foxtonian. Lord Croupier and Platonic were next. Ridden right out, Master Crusoe held on to win the second division from Sunshine Bay, who came home well, with the early ieader, Jet Plane, third. Then followed Tanjeen, Gay Fellow and Coronara. Coshona made a procession of the third division and won with something in hand. Aki Aki and Robin’s Song were always the nearest attendants. Kippo and Wembley were best of the others. Ridden with great confidence, Indian Song ran down the pacemaker, Night Royal, just short of the post in the Mangapapa Handicap No. 1. Bright Side, slow away, finished solidly for third, two length further back, with Jinny Jinks and Lajani next. The Mangapapa Handicap No. 2 was won with the greatest of ease by Trafalgar Day, who sat in behind the two pacemakers, Garry and Currency Lass, until the home stretch was reached. There he strode away to win by four lengths. Garry hung on for second and had a neck advantage over Lady Minter. Then came Lady Oratory, Currency Lass and The Rip. Each-way favourite for the Victoria Handicap, Field Marshall waited on the leaders, Brolga, Neap Tide, Newel Post, Battle Strife, Lochwinnoch and Nightena, until reaching the straight. He then swept past the field to win handily by a neck. Sergeant Jack took fourth place off Newel Post. Details of results: — HOPELAND'S HACK HURDLES.
