SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND AT EGMONT WINTER MEETING

Interesting racing at Hawera on Saturday was a feature of the concluding day of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting. Royal. Scholar won the Adamson Steeplechase to register his first success in five seasons on the turf. Whooray easily won the Manawapou Hurdles. Gildchase, Baffles Rex and Gay Stitches, firstday winners, repeated their successes, and Bramerton and Kia Ora Katoa dead-heated in the open sprint.

Sensation of the day was the win dividend of nearly two centuries which was hoisted when Rumba defeated his stablemate, Curtana, in the Waihi Hack Handicap. In a total pool of more than £6700 there was only £l3 10s (win) and £35 10s (place) on Rumba, who s is owned and trained by Cr. W. Moore at Hawera. Just over six years ago Moore provided another century dividend-payer in Golden Acre at a Hawera meeting, but Rumba’s is believed to be a record in racing on the course. With weather and track conditions ideal, there was an increased attendance, reflected on the totalisator turnover of f 50,165, compared with £50,241 on the concluding day last year. The aggregate for the two days was £98,001, a decrease of only £2704 10s compared with £100,705 10s at the 1947 winter meeting. After the Manawapou Hurdles F. Buchanan, rider of Ei Tiger, was before the judicial committee and, though no action was taken, he was advised to infuse more vigour into his efforts in future. GILDCHASE AGAIN Gildchase comp eted the big flat double for the meeting when he scored a rather easy win in the Davidson Handicap, for which he was favourite at a good pace. With an allowance of 71b he had only 7.1 in the saddle, and apprentice J. Moore quickly took him to the front. Atomic and Dunbar moved up at the halfmile, ana Second Seal was almost on terms with the pacemaker turning tor home, where Loyal Bian had come right round the field. Gildchase Come away to win by a length, Loyal ; Bian beating Second Seal by a head : for second. Then came Mercian Lad, Silver Wedding, Dunbar and Atomic almost in line. DEAD-HEAT IN SPRINT Deperateiy ridden over the iina half-furlong in the Mokoia Handicap, Bramerton got up in the last stride to share the honours with Kia Ora Katoa in a dead-heat. At the end of a furlong Deprive had run up fast to share the lead with Franada, with I Playtos, Travel King, Mallow, BramI erton and Peter Theio next. Deprive hit the front a furlong from home, but Kia Ora Katoa then headed him and in the iast 100 yards Bramerton flashed up to be on terms on the line. Deprive was a length and a-quarter back, ahead of Franada, Playtos, Mallow and Peter Theio. GOOD FINISH IN ’CHASE The seven acceptors lined up for the Adamson Steeplechase, but over the final mile there were only four left in. However, they provided a stirring finish, with Royal Scholar defeating Kiimanagh and Tatara Lad. Political Boy was pulled up after going a mile and a-half, prior to which Tide Area had lost his rider at ..the sod wail and Plato Pal had baulked at the end of a circuit. Plato Boy had a lead of several lengths six furlongs from home, but the others ran up to him going out of the back stretch, and at the last fence Royal Scholar, ■ Kiimanagh and Tatara Lad were almost on terms. In a fine finish Royal Scholar did best to win by half a length from Kiimanagh, with Tatara Lad less than a .ength away and Plato Boy a good fourth. EASY FOR WHOORAY Whooray made an auspicious return to the jumping game by registering a hollow win in the Manawapou Hurdles, for which he was near.y as well backed as the first-day winner, Foxland. General Saleve ran off at the second fence, his rider losing his irons. Running down to the half-mile Whooray moved through to challenge Foxland. He assumed the iead crossing the top and ran home ar. easy winner, six lengths ahead of Foxland. I Full Pitch, at a long price, was two lengths back, third, just ahead of Spiro, Bronze Abbey and Lord Leo, with a big gap back to Glenfayle and Tide Area. SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND A win dividend not far short of two centuries was hoisted when the Ha-wera-trained Rumba won the Waihi Hack Handicap, with nls tablemate Curtana in second place. Olympia lost his rider in the first half-furlong. Beau Flight moved up to join Lucky Spin at the half-mile and Curtana also improved her position to take the lead three furlongs from home, being followed into the straight by Lucky Spin, Rumba and Reward. Over the final stages Rumba did best to win by a length from Curtana, who was a length and a-half in front of Übbriaco. Then came Brookland, Royal Reserve, Reward, Capitalist (who missed the jump-out) and Bella Mia.

ANOTHER FOR BAFFLES REX Batley was backed as unbeatable for the Tonks Memorial Hack Plate, but failed to finish in a dividendpaying place, the race being won easily by the Stratlord-trained Baffles Rex. Batley ran up to join Fine Flavour at the half-mile, but Baffles Rex then made a fast forward move which carried him into the lead before reaching the straight. Over the final stages nothing had a chance with Baffles Rex, who won by three lengths from White Cliffs. The latter came home fast, as also did Guardian, an outsider, for third place, ahead of Batley and Morea Fox, with Bahtacha, Dawn March and Red Sari | next. AT DOUBLE FIGURES 1 The Awakino-owned and trained Afton Water scored at double figures l in the Shorts Hack Handicap. It ; was a straggling start in which Bonnie Fair and Flying Gleam were slow : and Cherry Grove was badly left. Once they straightened up for the ) run home Afton Water ran to the I front and stayed on to hold off Kilarney Boy by a length, with Lady Barrington finishing better than Bonnie Fair to take third money, a length and a-half back, ahead of Bian Rouge, i Dallas and Lord Phrosa. I GAY STITCHES REPEATS | The Awapuni-trained Gay Stitches followed up his first-day win with another success in the Borougn Hack Handicap. The field was sent away without Terang, who refused to line up. After a couple of fur.ongs White Diamond and Gay Stitches were clear of Superior Fdx, Broiealice and Gay Joy, with Pan Walla next. Gay Stitches had White Diamond's measure at the distance, and then held off Pan Walla by three lengths. Surya came home fast for third place, just ahead of Bonnie Fair, who was well I back at the home turn. Then came ■ White Diamond, Gay Joy and Waimate.
